This week's Wrestler of the Week is Hunter Fick.
Hunter
verbally committed to wrestling last year during the section tournament. At the
time, we had heard that he was a strong, no, really strong kid from Ashby.
Turns out he was. As sophomore, there are only a few wrestlers I can think of
that have had the kind of strength that Hunter possess. However, it takes more
than strength to wrestle. Beyond the weight room what is impressive about
Hunter is his leadership and work-ethic in the practice room. He works
incredibly hard and really has integrated himself with his
teammates.
Hunter
has improved each time on the mat. He is exciting to watch. He keeps the fans
entertained with his energy and his charisma on the mat. He is a great addition
to this team. His 3rd place finish at the Grant County Tournament has earned
him this accolade.

Week 1 Wrestler of the Week
8th Grader, Jake Nohre has been selected as the Knight Wrestler of the Week. He started his varsity wrestling debut with two wins. The first came against Pelican Rapids. Jake beat a wrestler that he had dropped matches on 4 previous meetings. Jake then claimed his second victory that night against his 106 lb opponent from Ottertail Central. Since that time Jake has also claimed two additional victories and is currently 4-0 on the season.
Jake has always been undersized, yet pound-for-pound he is one of the most technical and powerful wrestlers in the room. Coaches use Jacob as an example of how to stay in good position while wrestling. Although naturally talented, Jacob has spent a considerable amount of time on the mat and has put on thousands of miles on the road traveling to practice and to tournaments for over 7 years. Jacob is the single wrestler at this time from Evansville.
Good Job Jake and Keep up the Great Work.
(Also - Thanks to Tim and Julie as they have put on just as many miles in the last several years.)

By: Kevin Fick
Sat.,
December 1st Hunter Fick competed in Sioux Falls, SD in the USAPL Sioux
Empire Bench Open. The event was held in
the McCrossan Boys Ranch Gymnasium and was sanctioned by the United States of
America Powerlifting Association.
The event
featured 29 competitive lifters, each athlete attempts three lifts in the bench
press. Hunter competes in the Teen ll
amateur division of this organization which includes 16-17 yr old men that are
tested for substances. This is a natural
competition. All gear the athlete wears
must be checked in during the weigh-in process and each lift is judged by three
officials. Hunters first attempt was 335
lbs. After the start, press and rack
command Hunter claims his 2nd Minnesota title in a month. The 2nd attempt was at 355 lbs,
Hunter cleared the lift for a new American title but the lift was disregarded
for a voice command infraction. The 3rd
attempt of the day scratched. Hunter’s
new record exceeded the old MN record by 48 lbs. Hunter placed 1st overall for the
Teen Divisions and 2nd in power points for the overall behind SD
lifter Casey Raaen. The meet was

A must read for all Coaches, Wrestlers, and Parents Being Extraordinary in the Sport of Wrestling By Steve Fraser
Being Extraordinary in the Sport of Wrestling
By Steve Fraser
October 12, 2012
What a great word… ‘Extraordinary’. Being extraordinary means being exceptional, amazing and remarkable. What a wonderful way to be. Who doesn’t want to be extraordinary in life? Who doesn’t want to ‘have’ an extraordinary existence? And for wrestlers and coaches, who doesn’t want to have an extraordinary wrestling career? So what does it take to be extraordinary in the sport of wrestling?
Let’s start with integrity. Having integrity in one’s wrestling career means we honor our word. We do what we say we will do. And we finish what we start. Having integrity with the way we train and how we interact with our coaches or wrestlers is the foundation of creating a strong bond between coach and athlete. It leads to great trust which is essential in moving in a positive direction. Athletes must trust that their coaches have their very best interests in mind. And coaches have to trust that their athletes are fully committed to be the best that they can be. This mutual trust is the foundation for great skill development and progress in achieving success.
Be complaint-free! Eliminating (or limiting) gossip and negativity will lead toward positive actions and attitudes. Focusing on what we can control in regards to our athletic training and progress is the only way to be. Complaining about things only sets up a negative environment that will lead us down a dark path. The grueling training and all the hard work that is involved with becoming a successful wrestler makes it difficult enough without being surrounded by negative feelings and thoughts. If we don’t like something and it is a real issue then we must change it! We can’t just complain about it. We must do something to get in a positive environment, which is crucial for one to flourish. On the mat, we should never complain to the referee, our opponent or coach, even if our opponent does something illegal. We should ignore our opponent’s illegal action like it never happened. This will make our opponents think we are too tough to complain.
Be powerful! Ask for results and help with straight communication. No beating around the bush. Honesty along with a professional, forthright communicative approach will help one to solve issues and focus everyone involved on the tasks at hand. On the mat, we should never show any sign of weakness. We should always be powerful and confident in our actions.
Be courageous! Have your fear and act anyway. We all experience fear at times. To achieve something extraordinary we have to be courageous in our attack and our approach. Whether it is on the mat with an opponent,or facing a conflict within our training situation. Be bold and confident that you will do your best to win or overcome the obstacle. This courageous mindset will help us to climb the highest mountain.
Be peaceful! Give up the fear that anything is wrong. We need to be at peace with how we are training and what we are doing. This will give us the total confidence that we are on the right road. Our personal lives come into play here. We need to be living the life that – deep down inside – we know is the right way to live, according to our own personal moral compass. Having inner guilt or doubt about ourselves will keep us from being at peace. Now, our moral compasses may differ. I am not saying everyone has to have the same moral standards. However, the key is our inner conflict. Do we have inner conflict or not? On the mat, we need to be confident that we are paying the price to win. Off the mat, we need to be confident that we are living the right lifestyle; a lifestyle that meets our personal belief that shows our true character as a human being. Kevin Jackson, an Olympic Champion and head coach of Iowa State University, said it this way, “To be the best one has to have his/her whole life in order to be at peace, which is essential in achieving great success.”
Be charismatic! Fully powerful and available in such a way that whoever we are with feels that we are truly present with them in that moment. This includes teammates, coaches, administrators and all supporters. As an athlete showing our coaches that we are present with them and coachable will inspire them to help us even more. Same for a coach, being present and charismatic with athletes will evoke an open-mindedness and excitement among those athletes.
Be enrolling! Get people involved with our career, enroll people into our life and be willing to create from all the possibilities. Creating a strong support group and surrounding ourselves with great people will help us to build our career. Learning from this team of supporters will guide us forward in a very positive way.
As I continue to search my own heart for ‘my part’ in our future Greco-Roman national program I am forced to look at all of these principles of extraordinary living and see where I fall short. My work starts there.
Expect To Win!

Attitude
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearances, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home. The remarkable thing is that we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing that we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life takes 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
Effort Takes No Talent!!!

Jake Larkin attends10-day intensive wrestling camp at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York
Jake Larkin who is weighing 140 pound and is an incoming freshman at WCA participated in a
10-day intensive wrestling camp at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York from June 24th-July 3rd.
The camp was designed for the serious wrestler who desired a highly competitive and intense training experience.
All aspects of folk-style wrestling were covered, with special attention paid the psychological and physical development of each wrestler.
Jake was exposed to training techniques of some of the worlds’ most accomplished wrestlers.
His favorite clinician was Mitch Clark, he is best known for his 17-0 technical fall in the first period of the 1998 NCAA finals.
He is looking forward to sharing his newly acquired skills with his teammates this winter.
Jake attended the camp with his cousin, Collin Blackwell from Commerce, Michigan.
After the camp, Jake’s aunt and uncle treated him to a baseball game at Detroit’s Comerica Park. The game happened to be the Detroit Tigers against the Minnesota Twins.
Following the game, Jake witnessed the most impressive fireworks display he had ever seen.
Jake thought the camp experience was great, the trip to New York was good, being escorted onto his airplane as the very first person seated was pretty cool, the Tigers game okay (since the Twins lost) and the fireworks display was awesome.

Barrett 5K
On Saturday, June 23, 2012, a group of WCA wrestling coaches, wrestlers, parents, and managers assembled to take part in the Barrett Old Settler's Reunion 5K run. Paul Mickelsen, Tammie Olson, Aaron Ray, Chad Lorensen, Ethan Olson, and Kade Olson all placed top three in each of their respective divisions; four of those being 1st place earnings. Tyler and Chris Onstad (not pictured) also ran the 5K. Royal Crow and Kyle Olson helped with the water station at the half-way point of the race, while Nels and Brenda Onstad helped at the finish line with timing.
Proceeds for the Barrett 5K race went to the West Central Minnesota Running Club, which benefit the WCA Schools cross country and track and field programs. The running club will be putting on two more races this summer; one will be in Elbow Lake for Flekkefest on August 4th, and the other will be in Hoffman for Harvest Festival on August 11th.

5 WCAAE Wrestlers go to Cobber Camp!
With summer just beginning, 5 WCAAE wrestlers traded 5 days of free time and relaxation for 5 days of team bonding, wrestling technique, intense drilling, weight lifting, iron man competitions, and wrestling matches. The boys joined other wrestlers from the area to form a dual team. The team went 4-5 in the duals. WCA Alumni Jake Long who was a 2x state finalist for the Knights wrestling team, spent time working and coaching the five wrestlers. The boys always enjoy the camp, working with top notch athletes like Jake make it even better. Besides working with Jake they also enjoyed technique sessions with U of M wrestlers and Alumni. Co head coaches Clay and Matt Nagel run the camp. This is just one of the few camps that WCAAE wrestlers will be attending over the summer!
Pictured from left to right Kode Seifert, Koel Seifert, Kyle Mickelsen, Tyler Onstad, and Braeden Long
While looking around the Concordia wrestling facilities I came across this great paper written by Marty Morgan who wrestled and coached for the U of M. I snapped a quick picture of it with my phone. If you zoom in on it i am sure you will enjoy this quick read.
Tyler Onstad and Hunter Gruchow Compete at the MNUSA Greco and Freestyle State Tournament
Just about a month has passed since these two boys wrestled in the MNUSA State Greco/Freestyle tournament but it seems just like yesterday. While Freestyle and Greco wrestling styles do not get the same attention that Folkstyle (high school) wrestling does, it is the two styles that are represented in the Olympics. Tyler competed at 105 lbs in the Schoolboy division and Hunter competed at the 50 lbs peewee division. After making weigh-ins that were good for the weekend on Friday May 18th, Greco competition began. Hunter Gruchow went 2 and 1 on the day which earned him 2nd place honors. Tyler Onstad fought hard through his two bouts but unfortunately lost both matches. Greco Roman discipline is different than folkstyle and freestyle disciplines in the fact that wrestlers may not touch the opponents legs in any way. Scoring is different and would require another 3 pages of writing to explain but the main goal is still to get a pin! After a night of fun in the pool and some rest the two boys were ready to get after it the next day. Saturday brought the Freestyle State Tournament and another day of great competition. Tyler lost his first match of the day but came back with a great win by fall against his opponent from Rochester Mn. Tyler Lost in his third match of the day and concluded his competition for the weekend. Hunter went 3 and 1 on the day and earned another 2nd place medal. It was a great weekend for these two wrestlers, they wrestled some great competition, enjoyed each others company, met some new wrestling friends, and expanded their knowledge and ability in the oldest sport in the world "WRESTLING."

Flat Earth Freestyle and Greco Results
Tyler Onstad, Jake Larkin, Levi Larkin, and Hunter Gruchow wrestled in the Flat Earth MN USA state qualifier this weekend. What a great experience! There were many talented wrestlers wrestling in the Jackson, Mn High School gym on Saturday morning. The boys wrestled great but also realized they are still learning when it come to the greco/freestyle disciplines. It's great they are going out and giving their all in something they are not all completely comfortable in. These 4 boys are all new to the greco/freestyle world and they ran with some of Minnesota's best.
Jake Larkin 3rd Greco/4th Freestyle
Levi Larkin 1st Greco/1st Freestlyle
Tyler Onstad 2nd Greco/2nd Freestyle
Hunter Gruchow 1st Greco/1st Freetyle
Good Work Boys!!
From The MN USA Website:
Taking part in MN USA wrestling events is a great way to make some of the biggest improvements in the sport of wrestling. Spring is the time when most wrestlers start wrapping it up for the year. Most wrestlers take this time off and wait until fall to resume their wrestling career. Why? Unless you are playing in another sport like baseball or track & field why not keep "playing" in wrestling? And even if you are playing another sport why not wrestle in a few tournaments? You might practice twice a week in a local wrestling room (Alexandria) and keep "playing" with the sport so you can keep improving your skills.

wanted to post to see if anyone else was interested. Here is the website. June
1-3 http://www.fcand.org/fca-wrestling-camp-at-crystal-springs
*First response to me at long@runestone.net gets the
transportation.
I would offer up one of my vehicles if we get a lot of interest, so there would
be room for three more if needed, but we'll get to that when we see if there is
any interest.
Thanks! Brenda Long

Freestyle and Greco Schedule in Alexandria
Freestyle / Greco Wrestling
Alexandria
Grades 4-12
We are excited to
offer a local freestyle /greco wrestling program here in Alexandria for
wrestlers in grades 4 - 12. This is a great opportunity to “extend“ and enrich
your season as well as learn and participate in a slightly different style of
wrestling.
Freestyle and Greco
Roman wrestling are the predominant forms of wrestling throughout the world and
are contested internationally and at the Olympics. Freestyle wrestling does
have slightly different rules and scoring, but is very comparable to “Folk
style” and wrestlers adapt quickly to the new style. Most importantly, practicing Freestyle
wrestling makes you a better folk style or high school style wrestler.
Practice will be
held on Monday and Thursday evenings in the wrestling room at Discovery Middle
School in Alexandria beginning March 12
Practices: March 12 – March 31 7:30
– 9:00 PM
April 4 –
May 31 6:30 – 8:30 PM
Fee: a $20 fee will be charged to cover facility
rental.
If your wrestler
wishes to compete in Freestyle wrestling tournaments, they are held throughout
the state. Information on tournament
locations can be obtained by viewing http://mnusa.wrestlingsystems.com/
If you are
interested in participating or have further questions about the program or
style of wrestling, please attend a practice in the wrestling room at Discovery
Middle School, or feel free to contact Scott Johnson (Coach) at
320-760-6217 or Brendan Bogart
